| 12th December | £1k Silver Band Grant. |
| Torrington Silver Band are better off to the tune of £1000 thanks to a grant from their District Councillor and council Chair, Mrs Margaret Brown. Councillor Brown presented the cheque from her Councillor Community Grant allowance to Silver Band Chairman Nigel Spear during the Band's afternoon performance of its Christmas Concert in Howe Concert Hall, Great Torrington. The money is going to be used to purchase new jackets for the band which should be ready in time for May Fair 2010. | 12th December | Bands Christmas Concert |
| The band held its Christmas Concert on Saturday 12th December. Although the concert clashed with the final of X – Factor, the good people of Torrington turned out once again to support the band. Although it was a Christmas concert, the band played a variety of music. As one of the players said, there are only so many ways you can play ‘Good King Wenceslas’. One of the pieces that the band played was entitled ‘The Rose’, made famous by Westlife and Bett Middler who sang it recently on Strictly Come Dancing. The arrangement that the band played was by the band’s Tenor Horn Player, Sylvia Bradley. The corps of drums also featured in the concert, playing 2 pieces with the band: Midway March and Sempre Fidelis. They also gave an effective display using Ultra-violet lights. The learners again showed how well they are progressing. Alex and James played a piece called Working on the Railroad, Matthew & Sarah played Study in C, before being joined by Rosanna, Lucy & Archie to play ‘The Flintstones ’ arranged by Sylvia Bradley. Alex, James, Matthew, Sarah, Lucy, Rosanna & Archie also received certificates for successfully completing their latest Theory books. There was also a piece called a ‘Music Extravaganza’ by Sarah & Hope, who have only been playing for 6 months. The band would like to thank all those people who braved the snow and ice during our annual carol playing in the square and the cavaliers for sharing the entertainment on the Saturday morning. |
